Stock Market Updates for today (17th June '11)

Weak global markets and concerns about growth following the recent rate hike and fears of further monetary tightening measures from the central bank rendered the mood bearish on the major Indian bourses today and pushed the key indices Sensex and Nifty to their third successive close in the red.

The market opened on a firm note this morning on the back of some bargain hunting in a few blue chip stocks. But the buoyancy proved quite short-lived as investors turned cautious and started pressing sales in several blue chips.

The Sensex, which plunged to 17,844.09, ended the day at 17,870.53 with a loss of 115.35 points or 0.64%. The Nifty closed at 5366.40, slightly off the day's low of 5355.85, netting a loss of 30.35 points or 0.56%.
