Stock Market Updates and Commentary for Today (18th May '11)

After moving in a somewhat listless fashion right through the session, the market ended with modest losses today with investors pressing sales in heavyweight stocks State Bank of India  and Reliance Industries. Though a few front line stocks managed to attract attention and posted notable gains, losses posted by the two heavyweights were so sharp that the key indices ended in the red.

Global cues were fairly positive, but investors back home appeared none too keen on building up positions. Instead, they were seen indulging in some selling almost right through the session, amid concerns about inflation and a possible slowdown in economic growth.

The Sensex, which declined to 18,020.79 in afternoon trades, ended the day at 18,086.20 with a loss of 51.15 points or 0.28%, while the Nifty ended the day at 5420.60, off the day's low of 5401.25, recording a loss of 18.35 points or 0.34%.

How and Where did the Stock Market Moved Today (17th May '11)

The market ended notably lower on Tuesday as stocks, led by SBI and ONGC, tumbled on heavy selling. A sharp plunge in SBI's earnings triggered the sell-off.

Weak global markets and concerns about a likely slowdown in economic growth too contributed to the decline. The Sensex ended at 18,142 (provisional) with a loss of 203 points or 1.1%.

The Nifty closed at 5440.30, down 58.70 points or 1.07%. Bank, oil and PSU stocks declined sharply.  Automobile, power, capital goods and realty stocks ended weak, despite edging off their lows. Select consumer durables, FMCG and IT stocks moved up.

Metal and pharma stocks mostly ended flat. The major laggard was SBI which lost over 7.5% and ONGC declined by over 6%.

RIL, Hero Honda, Reliance Infra, JP Associates, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Tata Motors and Maruti also ended notably lower. SAIL, GAIL, Ambuja Cements and Ranbaxy closed with sharp losses.

Jindal Steel, HUL, TCS and ITC posted smart gains. Midcap and smallcap stocks were mostly subdued. The market breadth was weak.

Stock Market and Nifty Outlook and Forecast for Tomorrow (17th May '11)

The NSE Nifty  tests it psychological mark of 5500. Heavy selling was seen in metals, banks, realty, auto, FMCG and oil & gas stocks. Top Players like Reliance, Infosys, ICICI Bank, ONGC and ITC were the major laggards.

It was weak closing for the markets today, the biggest losers being interest rate sensitive sectors like banking and realty. Metal also took a severe beating. There was some upward movement in healthcare and consumer durables, and they were the only two sectors to close positive. The Sensex closed at 18345, down 186 points from its previous close, and Nifty shut shop at 5499, down 46 points. The CNX Midcap index was down 0.7% and the BSE Smallcap  index also lost 0.7%. The market breadth was negative with advances at 377 against declines of 934 on the NSE. The top Nifty gainers were Ranbaxy, Hero Honda, Sun Pharma and Ambuja Cements and prime losers included JP Associates, Siemens, DLF, Bajaj Auto.

For the coming trading session the market seems to look bearsih due the inflation and especially the latest hike in the price of petrol. If Nifty future manages to break the resistance of 5580 then it will be in a bullish trend wheras the bears will keep ruling the market if the support level of 520 is broken.

Support for Nifty Futures - It has first support close to the level of 5420 & below this level the next support is seen near 5315 mark.
