Stock Market Updates for Today (14th June '11)

After a fairly sharp upmove in early trade, the market gave up some gains and then briefly slipped into the red before recovering ground and edging higher to sign off on a positive note on Tuesday.

While a firm trend in most of the markets in the Asian region set up a good start, stocks retreated around noon after data from the government revealed a surge in headline inflation. Amid concerns about a hike in interest rate and on worries the economy could see a slowdown for the next couple of quarters, if not longer, investors treaded cautiously and largely refrained from building up big positions.

The Sensex, which rose to 18,380.19 in morning trade, but dropped down to 18,261 around early afternoon, ended the day at 18,308.66 with a modest gain of 42.63 points or 0.23%. The Nifty  closed at 5500.50, recording a gain of 17.70 points or 0.32%. The NSE benchmark touched a high of 5520.15 and a low of 5484.20 during the session.
